Why is the media in India so negative?

This topic came into mind when I was going through Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's speech at IIT Hyderabad. At this speech he said,

"...Why is the media here so negative? Why are we in India so embarrassed to recognize our own strengths, our achievements? We are such a great nation. We have so many amazing success stories but we refuse to acknowledge them. Why?"

Then he also added,
"...I was in Tel Aviv once and I was reading the Israeli newspaper. It was the day after a lot of attacks and bombardments and deaths had taken place. The Hamas had struck. But the front page of the newspaper had the picture of a Jewish gentleman who in five years had transformed his desert land into an orchid and a granary.

It was this inspiring picture that everyone woke up to. The gory details of killings, bombardments, deaths, were inside in the newspaper, buried among other news. In India we only read about death, sickness, terrorism, crime. Why are we so NEGATIVE?"

So,lets start the discussion-

The probable reasons may be as follows,
  • Pre-independent Practice: Under British rule, the contemporary Indian newspapers had a tendency to blame everything regarding Britishraj. Then, it was necessary to show a bleak picture of what was happening in the country. But the same mindset continued even after independence. It is also true for the electronic media also.
  • Excessive Criticism: We can criticise ourselves efficiently. There is one positive aspect of it but a lot of negative aspects as most of the times the criticisms turns into blamings. Thus the prevalence of negativity in the media.
  • Biasness: To abase the position of opponent parties some politicians influence media and media also abet them for their profit. This type of narrow-minded media is easily influenced by the politicians and causes the production of fake and negative news.
I think these are the main reasons behind this negative mindset of media in India.
